The holiness of water is recognized and honoured in many traditions, religions and rituals. For thousands of years pagans and indigenous people knew about the power of water; that the tides of ebb and flow are responding to the greater cosmos of the stars, that water does not merely reflect images but records information. In and through water everything is born. Water carries the information of life. That is probably why all humans when thirsty crave water above all else.
Water is in all senses sacred, and people used to cherish and guard the water springs and sources. Many of which were used to communicate to the Other world like the Oracle of Delphi, to cleanse and clear from illness as in sacred washing ceremonies, to consecrate like it is still used in many religions including in Christian baptism. Lots of people have a longing for the sea, we still gather around water to sing and celebrate, because a lot of women served as water priestesses who guarded water. Yet, everyone has a connection to water because all humans are born in the primal ocean – a mother’s womb water.
Everyone of us can sit with water and attune to the sound of water. Take up responsibility for our water. Experience the power of water.
